Those who are behind in paying their bills from Franklin Medical Center will be given two months to pay half of the amount and be forgiven for the rest.
The hospital's board of commissioners voted Tuesday during its monthly meeting to begin a debt amnesty program "as soon as possible." The program would allow patients who are more than 180 days delinquent on their medical bills to be able to pay 50 percent within a 60-day period.
The hospital would forgive the rest of the debt if patients were to show up with "cash in hand" during the debt amnesty program.
"If you were to tell me that we can get 50 cents on the dollar today instead of waiting for the dollar to be paid somewhere down the line, I would say it's better to take the 50 cents," said board member Nick Poulos.
