Story Archives: Weather sweet to corn planters

Weather sweet to corn planters
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
A break in rainfall in recent days is giving area farmers a much needed chance to plant corn—Franklin Parish's chief crop.

Planting has been somewhat delayed by heavy rain that hit just about the same time that the LSU AgCenter advises producers to begin planting. Farmers are busy getting seed in the ground now that fair weather has returned to the parish.

"Our recommended planting time is March 15 to April 1, but folks have been trying to plant since early March. We were given a good fall for preparing the ground. I don't think that the rains will hamper corn production, but it's time to get out and plant," said Carol Pinnell-Alison, the AgCenter's county agent for Franklin Parish.
