Story Archives: Parish considers early mosquito abatement

Parish considers early mosquito abatement
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Because recent rains left standing water around Franklin Parish, the police jury is considering extending the time spent for mosquito abatement spraying this year.

The police jury formed a committee during Thursday night's regular meeting to look into the matter. Spraying usually runs from May to August, according to parish officials.

Mosquito abatement in Franklin Parish is done from truck-mounted sprayers that crisscross the parish to cover the nearly 18,000 acres where most residents live with pesticide.

Juror Leroy Scott would like for spraying to start as soon as possible to help give relief from the blood-sucking pests that are already starting to make a nuisance of themselves.
"Spraying early for mosquitos will do more to interfere with their life cycle and lessen reproduction," Scott said.
