Story Archives: Johnson getting it right

Johnson getting it right
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
It's no secret that this column has been critical of Mayor Jackie Johnson when I have believed criticism was warranted. Since there is no agenda in these writings other than to call things the way I see them, I feel it's only fair to give Johnson credit when he gets something right.

Johnson got it right at Monday night's Winnsboro Council Meeting by asking to hold off on the vote for his Turkey Creek Development Project until all councilmen could be present to vote. Johnson said he did so to be fair to Councilman Craig Gill's constituents.

Like last Monday when the meeting had to be rescheduled because there was no quorum present, Gill wasn't at the meeting. The other councilmen who have been against Johnson's plan—Sonny Dumas and Richard Mahoney—were there.

The story can be found on the front page of this newspaper and you can read what happened in greater detail there.
Johnson's plan might have been approved if a vote might have happened.

It seems that way, but I don't know for sure. I'm not privy to all the discussions that the mayor may or may not have had with councilmen about the matter. It could be that Johnson has reason to believe the vote might have gone differently and wanted to hold off on the matter.

That isn't the point.

Johnson has spent a great deal of time on his plan to develop Turkey Creek as a recreation area and I think that it's only fair that he be given the benefit of the doubt that he was sincere in asking the council to hold off on the vote for the right reasons—to keep from muddying the water more than it has already been muddied on this controversial issue.
