Major Claude Mercer has faithfully served the State of Louisiana for more than 38 years with over 34 years as a Louisiana State Police Officer and almost 4 years as a member of the State Gaming Control Board, but now he wants to give back to his community, which is why he is running for Sheriff in Richland Parish.

Mercer began his career as a Trooper in uniform patrol at Troop F and worked his way through the ranks to become a Major. He has experience and training in all phases of criminal investigation, uniform patrol and administrative duties.

He has over twenty-seven years in state police criminal investigations and over twenty years as a state police supervisor.

Mercer also served as Louisiana State Police representative on the State Child Death Review Board for seven years and the State Animal Welfare Commission for two years both appointed by Governor Mike Foster.
