Story Archives: The party is over

The party is over
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
"Turn out the lights, the party's over. They say that all good things must end. Call it a night, the party's over and tomorrow starts the same old thing again."—Willie Nelson.

I don't think that Thomas Sowell has ever used Willie Nelson lyrics in an editorial, but since I remember the late Lewis Grizzard—another hero of mine—doing so, I feel pretty good about the Willie prelude to this column.

At any rate, that old country song was playing in my head as I wrote the front page story in this newspaper about the Turkey Creek Development Project.

I want it understood that this isn't a column written to bash Mayor Jackie Johnson.

In fact, I admire Johnson for his vision that he feels will spur economic development in Winnsboro. This writing is simply meant as a reality check and I hope it will be accepted as such.

I think that all of us, especially local politicians, need to wake up to the fact that the party is over when it comes to federal spending.

Sometimes it takes a while, however, to notice how something has changed when you have been accustomed to things being a certain way for a long time.
