Salt domes no threat to water supply Some area farmers concerned that salt dome drilling might be contaminating water supplies needed for irrigation really have no need to worry, according to a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
The mines, which are being used by energy companies for natural gas storage, are too deep and there is little chance of seepage that would affect water supplies in Franklin Parish, said geologist Ben McGee.
"Is it in the realm of possibilities? Maybe, but I would say that it is a very remote possibility," McGee said. "The reason is that the salt domes in the area are isolated from fresh water sources, which come from shallow-ground water from the surface to 100 feet in depth. The salt domes are much deeper."
