|Council rejects police pay raise|
Mayor Jackie Johnson said that he is disappointed and surprised that the Winnsboro City Council rejected his plan to give an across-the-board pay raise to police officers.
The plan would have cost the city $38,291 annually, but wasn't approved when there was no majority vote for the measure from Winnsboro's five-member board of aldermen during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
Councilmen Craig Gill and Richard Mahoney voted against the measure. Councilmen Rex McCarthy and Betty Johnson voted for the measure. Councilman John "Sonny" Dumas abstained.
Winnsboro's budget would have to be amended to give the officers a raise this fiscal year, which some on the council said they are unwilling to do.
