I wonder what Mark Twain, who liked to say that he never let schooling interfere with his education, would say about the latest attempt to whitewash "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in an attempt to make it more palatable to school children.

The New South edition of the book, edited by Alan Gribben, replaces the "N" word with the word "slave," which might seem like a good idea, until you stop to do something that educators don't do much of these days---think.

Causing people to think about racism is exactly why Twain wrote his literary masterpiece without pulling any punches—that and because Twain didn't know write any other way.
