Rayville attorney David Doughty says he will be a candidate for 5th Judicial District Attorney.
Doughty will vie to succeed District Attorney Billy Coenen. Coenen announced last week he will retire March 1, ending a 27-year stint as district attorney for Franklin, Richland and West Carroll parishes. Coenen will depart office with three years remaining on a six-year term.

A special election will be called to fill the remainder of Coenen's term. A date for the special election has not been set by the Secretary of State's office.

Doughty has served as an assistant district attorney in the 5th Judicial District for the past 20 years.

He says he decided to run for district attorney after spending the past few days discussing the idea with his family.
