Good news of great joy
A Christmas message from Pastor Dave Philips, River of Life
Let's examine the proclamation of the great company of heavenly hosts who appeared with the angel that holy night:
"Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth Peace to Men on whom His favor rests."
I find this NIV translation to be the closest to the meaning and intent of the original Greek. It also agrees with an understanding of the message of the new covenant. Notice, the angels did not announce peace among men, peace between nations, people groups, political parties, or society; but peace to men. Jesus himself confirms this when he said, "Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division!" Then again John's Gospel states "Thus the people were divided BECAUSE of Jesus!"
