Funding for the Franklin Parish Acquisition Elevation Project has been secured through the Federal Emergency Management Association, according to Mitch Reynolds, local director of homeland security. The money will come from a portion of $4.2 million in federal funds allocated to Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"When the process began 19 months ago, there were 30 approved applications for acquisition and four apps for elevations," said Reynolds.

Parish residents with repetitive losses due to flooding in the area were eligible to either sell their property, or have their homes mechanically elevated to a higher plane.

Property sold under the federal buy-out program calls for payment for only a part of the value of the property and for the property to be placed in an uninhabited or green state under the ownership of the Franklin Parish Police Jury.
