|Ellington makes it official|
State Rep. Noble Ellington has switched to the Republican Party, giving the GOP control of the Louisiana House of Representatives for the first time in more than 130 years.
Ellington said last week that he would announce by Jan. 10 if he would switch from the Democratic Party, but decided to make the change earlier and signed up as a Republican on Friday at the Franklin Parish Registrar of Voters Office.
His defection from the Democrats gives the Republican House GOP Caucus 53 members — enough to tip the balance of power in the House to Representatives for the first time since Civil War Reconstruction.
The Congressional Reconstruction Act of 1867 took the right to vote away from Confederate leaders and sympathizers, leaving virtually every public body in the South in Republican hands in the years following the war.
