Bad news and good news

If you check out the front page of this newspaper—which I assume most of you have done before reading this page—you will find both good and bad economic news in Winnsboro.

The bad news, of course, is the closing of one of the city's few manufacturers —Vineyard Furniture International. The shut down of the plant built by Ron Ashley that once employed 75 to 80 people is especially bitter because it comes at Christmas.

Sitting in Ashley's office the other day at Ron's Warehouse Furniture in Baskin, which is still open for business, I could tell how much it saddened him that he was forced to quit operations at the plant that so compliments Winnsboro Industrial Park when seen from La. Highway 15.

Ashley told me that he had been laying off people for the last couple of years and was down to around 30 employees by the time he had to shutter Vineyard.
