Ellington considers party switch

State Rep. Noble Ellington believes the Democratic Party has left ideals embraced by more conservative members, and he said it's very likely he will soon be leaving the party.

Ellington, of Winnsboro, has been an influential Democrat in the Legislature for more than two decades. By Jan. 10, however, he said he would announce whether he will remain in a party that he sees as drifting too far to the left or if he will become a Republican.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that the latter will happen, he said on Friday.

"I'm giving it serious consideration and have been talking to Sen. (David) Vitter and other influential Republicans. I still have some of my Democrat friends that I have to visit with," Ellington said. "I don't want to leave with any hostility, but I feel that, basically, the conservative side of the Democratic Party is not there anymore."
