Feds declare parish disaster area

Franklin Parish's recent declaration as a disaster-area by the federal government opens a door for farmers and ranchers who lost money due to this year's drought to be able to recoup losses through low-interest emergency loans.

Franklin is one of 36 parishes that have been declared primary natural disaster areas caused by a drought that began March 23. The declaration makes agriculture producers eligible for consideration for disaster aid from the United States Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency.

Many Franklin Parish producers were able to ward off effects from months of sparse rainfall by irrigating, but some were not so lucky. Among those hit the hardest in Franklin Parish were cattlemen and pecan producers, said Carol Pinnell-Alison of the LSU AgCenter.
