State unveils new flag design

It's the same, only different.

A new design for the Louisiana state flag was unveiled in Baton Rouge last Monday during the swearing in of Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, former secretary of state, and the incoming Secretary of State Tom Schedler.

The new flag features a redrawn brown pelican, Louisiana's state bird, and her chicks with three drops of blood flowing from the mother's breast to represent self-sacrifice on a traditional blue backdrop with the state motto, "Union, Justice, Confidence."

Historically, the emblem included a bleeding pelican as she ripped her chest to feed her children to depict Louisiana's willingness to sacrifice for the good of her citizens.

The Louisiana Legislature voted during the 2006 session to create a new flag with the blood drops.
