Those who have served the U.S. as members of the armed forces were honored at a Veterans Day program on Thursday at the local VFW Hall.

Dignitaries joined residents in saying thank you at the event that was attended by veterans and their families, who enjoyed a chicken dinner courtesy of Walmart and were treated to a patriotic concert by country music singer-songwriter Chuck Day.

"So many have sacrificed and unselfishly given of themselves over the history of this mighty nation and we have young men and women continuing to give of themselves today. For two-hundred and thirty-four years, fighting men and women —Americans just like you and me — have defended the freedoms of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence," Winnsboro Mayor Jackie Johnson, who is a veteran, told those assembled.

Louisiana has always been a state quick to offer it's brave men and women in service of the nation, said Tommy Simms, the VFW's regional service officer.
