Parish wages lowest in state

Workers in Franklin Parish rank at the bottom of the state in weekly wage earnings, according to a report released last week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

On average, workers in Franklin Parish, measuring wages in the private and public sectors of the economy, earned $465 per week during the first quarter of 2010 — well below the national average of $889 per week and at the very bottom of wage earners in Louisiana.

In Franklin Parish, a perfect storm of bad economic factors has accumulated to place wage earners at the bottom of the list, said Cheryl Abbot, a Bureau regional economist.

"The wages are pretty low and the unemployment rate is high in relation to both national and state averages, so the economy doesn't look at all healthy in Franklin Parish," said Abbot.
