Story Archives: Rubber plant catches fire

Rubber plant catches fire
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
A fire that ignited Sunday morning at Winnsboro Rubber Recyclers sent plumes of black, toxic smoke a hundred feet high and destroyed a warehouse stocked with inventory at the plant.

Emergency officials said it took nine hours to contain the fire that begin in a debris pile near the warehouse around 9 a.m. at the facility, which is located at Winnsbroro Industral Park.

Mitch Reynolds, Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director for Franklin Parish, called the massive fire the largest he has seen in this 30-year career.

"I saw black smoke from the time I left my house," Reynolds said. "When I arrived the Winnsboro fire department was already on the scene, but the fire exceeded local resources. The call was expanded to outside of Franklin Parish though the homeland security network."

Emergency responders from 16 districts arrived to help battle the blaze, including fire-fighters from Richland Parish, Ouachita Parish, Catahoula Parish and Tensas Parish.

The fire was contained using foam retardant around 6 p.m. Sunday, but flare ups were still being sprayed as late as Tuesday, Reynolds said.
