Home grown country: Winnsboro native turns Nashville success

As a younger man, Galen Griffin was given advice from local country crooner Gene King about his plans to head to Nashville and be a star.

"He said, 'Son, you don't want to do this for a living, but I said, 'No, no,' I was determined," Griffin said.

It's a good thing that Griffin, a Winnboro native, didn't take the advice that King gave him some 15 years ago.

Today at 36, he is living his dream in Nashville where he has made a name for himself as a writer with two songs that have broken into Billboards Country Music Chart's top 10 list.

While King warned Griffin about the pitfalls of the business, he took the young musician under his wing and into his band until he thought Griffin was ready to set out on his own.
