Forever Dr. Applewhite: Generosity 'core' of distinguished alumna At a time when few women sought careers in the medical field, Winnsboro native Mary Lou Applewhite blazed a trail for future generations as a 1955 graduate of LSU Medical School. After completing her studies, Dr. Applewhite went on to become the first woman appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. She was also the first woman to train a Charity Hospital in dermatology.
Throughout her career, Dr. Applewhite has become a distinguished professional in her field of study and a constant supporter of all things LSU. Her commitment to the university has been featured in LSU Alumni Magazine.
