What goes around...
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
A book that helped shape the way I see the world is "Generations," written by historians Neil Howe and the late William Strauss, which I read about 15 years ago. In it, Howe and Strauss argue that history is cyclical, not lineal. To put it simply, what goes around comes around. With that in mind, Republicans are getting ready to party like it's 1894.

For our readers who weren't around in 1894 and who aren't history geeks, that was the year that the Republican party kicked major Democrat butt with a 130 seat sweep of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democrats lost 125 seats in the House that year and there might have been a similar victory in the Senate—if senators had been elected by popular vote instead of state legislators in 1894. It should be remembered that there were only 357 House seats back then.

Republicans won't pick up 130 seats in today's 435 member House, but it's almost certain that they will wrest control away from Democrats on Nov. 2. Some pundits are predicting they will take over the Senate as well.

Looking back to 1894, there are similarities that call to mind something the great 19th Century American Mark Twain said, "History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme."
