Community says goodbye to parish's most decorated veteran of Vietnam era

You would never have known it because he didn't like to talk about it, but when funeral services were held for Clifton Chambley Saturday, mourners said good-bye to one of Franklin Parish's most decorated war heroes.

Chambley, who died last Tuesday at 65-years-old, was an unassuming man with no immediate family and few friends who had retired from working for his hometown of Wisner as water superintendent.

Few might guess that as a younger man he bravely flew helicopters into Vietnam War kill zones, but those who knew about his service in the U.S. Army knew the true measure of this local unsung hero.

Among the medals that Chambley could boast—but never did— include the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, Army Aviator Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leave Cluster and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star.
