Story Archives: Random thoughts

Random thoughts

In the spirit of the Obama Administration, I have decided that there should be some sharing of the wealth around here—specifically, intellectual wealth.
Since the great columnist Thomas Sowell has much more intellectual wealth than I could ever hope to accumulate, I will take an idea from him and redistribute it to the less fortunate—namely me by using his "Random Thoughts On the Passing Scene" idea for my column.

Here are some of mine. They might not be as brilliant as Dr. Sowell's, they are just as random:

• There is an old joke about the Lone Ranger and his Indian companion, Tonto, finding themselves surrounded by hundreds of fierce Apache warriors. The Lone Ranger tells Tonto, "Well, my friend, it looks like we are in for the fight of our lives." Tonto replies, "What do you mean 'we,' paleface?" There might be a lesson in this joke for people in the Tea Party Movement who are cozying up to Washington Republicans heading into the Nov. 2 elections.

• My great-grandfather never had enough money to have running water in his house, yet he was one of the cleanest, most meticulous people I have ever known. He was also always smiling and laughing. To me, this goes to show that you don't need much money to be happy—or clean.
