Johnson defends animal director

Winnsboro Mayor Jackie Johnson is standing by Russell Grant, the city's director of animal affairs who is under fire for sending a Winnsboro couple's dog to West Monroe to be euthanized.

In a letter to the editor delivered to the Franklin Sun on Monday, Johnson wrote that Grant is "a steward to the community" and "and one of the most compassionate and caring people I know."

The couple, Kim and Tommy Kimbrough, addressed the Winnsboro City Council and Johnson at the Sept. 20 regular council meeting, requesting that Grant be replaced after their pet was sent to be euthanized before the time prescribed by law had passed for them to reclaim him.
