Johnson can make things right
Winnsboro Mayor Jackie Johnson has delivered, as promised, his feelings on the situation that consumed most of the discussion at the city council's last meeting—the euthanizing of a Winnsboro family's beloved pet. That letter can be found elsewhere on this page.
Johnson chose not to comment on the matter at the Sept. 20 meeting, deciding instead to use this newspaper as a vehicle to relay his thoughts, especially how he feels about keeping Russell Grant, Winnsboro's director of animal affairs, in his current position.
The last few months have been rocky for Grant and Johnson. To be fair, Johnson didn't create the mess with the animal shelter but, it's his problem now.
As I wrote shortly after Johnson took office, the new mayor hit the ground running on the controversy that brought Winnsboro under a criminal investigation with his plan for the city to purchase a $14,000 facility to better house animals that where dying in the current shelter.
He was successful in getting the council to go along with the idea, but that success was soon marred by the Kimbrough controversy.
Now, all the Kimbroughs want after having their dog sent off by the to be killed is for steps to be taken to make sure that this kind of thing is less likely to happen to others people's pets.
Sadly, Johnson is keeping this albatross on the neck of his administration by his steadfast support of Grant. For the full story, subscribe to the The Franklin Sun's NEW E-Edition! |
