Mangham Dragons overtake OCS Eagles, 35-24

Mangham took advantage of four Ouachita Christian first half fumbles on its way to a 35-24 upset win over the Eagles Friday in Monroe.

It was the first win for Mangham over Ouachita Christian since 1985.

"OCS has a good football team, but they let us hang around and the kids started believing in themselves," said Mangham coach Tommy Tharp. "They turned it over a number of times and we took advantage of a couple."

Mangham's first score came when O.T. Miley forced OCS quarterback Paul Michael Garner to fumble the ball near his own end zone. Miley scooped the ball up and carried it over the goal line for the first score of the game.

In the second quarter the Eagles drove to the Mangham 5-yard line, but Shawn Key fumbled into the end zone, and the Dragons recovered for a touchback.

With OCS threatening again, Mangham forced another fumble at its 4-yard line and Neal Jones picked it up and returned it 80 yards to the OCS 15.

Shaquille Ausberry eventually scored from five yards out.

Ausberry added two touchdowns in the second half, while Seth Parker had a score.

"Mangham outhit us," OCS head coach Steven Fitzhugh said. "We had turnovers because they were more physical than we were. We're going to be hitting the sled Monday. We had a poor effort. I would rather get beat playing with a lot of heart than get beat without any kind of effort. Our offense played as bad as it could in the first half and our defense played lights out. Then our defense played as bad as it could in the second half and our offense came around."

Mangham visits Delhi Charter Friday. The Gators are led by running back Ricci Gray.

"He's as good as the Donald kid from Caldwell last year," Tharp said. "If we can slow him down, that will go a long way in slowing Delhi Charter down."
