Dragons drop Jamboree to Patriots

Mangham High opens its season at Ouachita Christian, taking on a team many consider one of the best in Class A.

The Eagles lost to St. John in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs last year after making it to the quarterfinals two years ago and to the semifinals the previous two years.

Offensively, the Eagles return two all-state players in senior quarterback Paul Michael Garner and receiver Mark Laird who was the first all-state sophomore in school history last year as he recorded close to 1,200 yards receiving.

"They will be the second-biggest team we play this year next to Farmerville," said Mangham head coach Tommy Tharp. "And they throw it around. They are a solid team.

We are going to have to try and grind the clock out and shorten the game as much as we can. We'll have more guys playing both ways."

Mangham lost to Franklin Parish 14-12 in the Franklin Parish Jamboree Friday. Seth Parker and Shaquille Ausberry scored on long runs for the Dragons.

"We did all right, but we turned the ball over too much," Tharp said. "We had three turnovers in the second half that cost us. Of course, Franklin Parish had a lot to do with that. But we still had our opportunities."
