Teachers, students gear up for new school year

Schools across the parish will be back in session in less than two weeks. Classes for Franklin Parish schools are set to resume on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010. Several back-to-school events are planned to welcome back students for the 2010-2011 school year.

Gilbert Junior High School will host an open house for students and parents on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. Parents are encouraged to tour the school and meet their students' teachers for the new year.

Fort Necessity Junior High School has scheduled its Back-to-School Night for Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. Principal Fay Philips invites all students, parents and members of the community to visit the campus.

Winnsboro Elementary will host open house Thursday, Aug. 19 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. School supply lists are available at the school and at local retailers.

Franklin Parish High School will host Freshman Academy in the cafeteria on Friday, Aug. 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The "I'm a Patriot" orientation program is designed to introduce incoming freshmen to their teachers while providing information on school activities, schedules and supply lists.

Superintendent Lanny Johnson said parents are encouraged to visit the newly-renovated classrooms and meet their child's teachers.
