Annual summer production set for Princess stage

'Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming' opening soon!

The place is Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina located just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is Saturday night, October 6, 1945, two months after VJ Day. The war is over, our boys are home, the Great Depression is a bad memory, and the baby boom has begun.

Mount Pleasant's principle industries are farming and pickle production. The Mount Pleasant Pickle Plant makes everyone and everything smell of vinegar and dill. The Sanders Family first performed at Mount Pleasant Baptist on June 15, 1938 after a five-year hiatus from the gospel circuit. They returned to Mount Pleasant each year until the beginning of the war in 1941. This is their first performance in four years and this is your ticket to laughter, music, fun and tears as the Princess Theatre presents "Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming," the third installment of the "Smoke on the Mountain" series.

Executive director Gene Thompson commented that the Summer Production has become the center piece of the season since the Princess started its performing arts format 20 years ago. "Our series members and the general public seem to really look forward to the event and we always have a great turnout each year", said Thompson. "We have done the other 2 productions of this series and everyone seemed to really love them. We hope everyone will make it out to see this fun show."

The production is being produced and directed by this year's Princess Players which include Honny Eldridge, Kevin Bates, Karl Wiggers, Kyle Kaufman, Leigh Jonson, Craig Gill, and Gene Thompson. Supporting stage and costume crew are Bill Jonson, Tanya Cobb and Bess Wiggers.

The Princess will present "Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming" Aug. 12 – 16 at 7 p.m., except for the Sunday, Aug 15 performance, which will be a 2 p.m. matinee. Admission is by series membership or $15 for ages 12 and up while ages 11 and under is $10 and are on sale now. For more information contact the Princess Theatre Box Office at 318-435-6299 or princesstheatre@bellsouth.net.

Programs of Princess Theatre, Inc. are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the Office of Cultural Development, and the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council.
