Murder under investigation

Detectives are investigating the Monday morning murder of a Winnsboro man at the Highway 4 Bar in Newellton.

Tensas Parish deputies and Louisiana State Troopers responded to an early morning shooting at the bar and arrived to find the body of Carl R. Crain of Winnsboro.

Crain, who worked as a bartender, had been robbed and shot to death at the bar, located at 3504 La. Hwy. 4, according to trooper Mark Dennis of the Louisiana State Police.

Officials believe he was killed around midnight, after the bar had closed.

Dennis said another man, Josh Hitt, was arrested later Monday for theft of a firearm.

Hitt occasionally worked as a disk jockey at the bar, said bar owner Eunice Welch.

Welch said detectives informed her that the gun Hitt allegedly stole is of the same type that is suspected to have been used to kill Crain.

State police wouldn't confirm that Hitt's arrest is connected with the shooting of Crain.

"All that I can tell you is that the murder is still under investigation and our guys are pretty good at what they do, so, hopefully, we will be able to tell you more soon," said Dennis.
