Broadway honored at festival Jeff Broadway of Huntsville, Ala., received the Medal of Distinction from the Alabama Sports Festival at the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Alabama Sports Festival State Games at the BJCC Arena on Friday, June 18. Broadway's career as a security officer has spanned 22 years.
In a continued effort to recognize the people who make contributions in the lives of students, the Alabama Sports Festival presented the Medal of Distinction to Alabama educators and support professionals on June 18. This was made possible by a Resolution that was passed by both Houses of the Alabama Legislature, signed by Gov. Riley.
Qualified recipients for the Medal of Distinction are active or retired educators or support professionals who have served at least 10 years in their respective fields. These heroes come from different backgrounds, including: public, private, homeschool, Christian, two and four year universities.
"For their tireless effort and commitment to the children of Alabama, we wanted to honor these heroes," said Ron Creel, president/CEO of the Alabama Sports Festival. "Standing at the front of the classrooms, behind the counters in the cafeteria, and at the desk in the main office, Alabama teachers and support personnel help to provide one of the greatest luxuries - Education.
The ceremony was presented on live television by WBMA ABC 33/40, WSFA-TV 12 NBC, and WKRG 5.3 RTV. The medals were designed, minted and presented by the Alabama Legislature, the Alabama Sports Festival, and the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness.
Jeff Broadway is a native of Franklin Parish and is a graduate of Gilbert High School. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana University (currently the University of Louisiana - Monroe) in criminal justice. He is the son of Katherine Broadway of Winnsboro.
The Alabama Sports Festival, now in its 28th year, is a non-profit organization that started at the request of the United States Olympic Committee and is part of a nationwide network of state games programs. The Alabama Sports Festival teaches the importanct of academic excellence and good citizenship skills, in addition to hosting at statewide, Olympic-style athletic competition.
