Story Archives: La. Patriots top seed in playoffs

La. Patriots top seed in playoffs
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Louisiana Patriots (9-1) will be the top seed in the playoffs beginning this Saturday at Patriot Stadium.

The Patriots will host the Houston Cardinals to begin the playoffs, a team the Patriots suffered their lone loss to this year.

The Patriots are coming off a convincing 48-37 victory over in-state rival Lake Charles last weekend. The game marked the first time in the Patriot defense had given up 30 or more points in a single game this season. Even with the flurry of points scored by Lake Charles last week, the Patriot defense still ranks among the leagues best by giving up just 8.5 points per contest.

By contrast, the Patriot offense was clicking on all cylinders and looking in top form in front of the home town crowd in Winnsboro. The Patriots are the defending league champions and will have to win three consecutive playoff games to repeat and take the gold for a second consecutive season.

Kenny Kitchen has been masterful at quarterback for the Patriot and has found many favorite targets for his crisp passes. Kenneth Miller, Vernon Mills, and Herman Harris have all been instrumental in getting the passing game going for the Patriots after it seemed to be inconsistent at the beginning of the season.

On defense, the Patriots have used one specialty to keep teams out of the endzone, the takeaway. With interception specialist such as Donovan Williams and Terry Poe on the squad, the Patriots have been able keep opposing offenses off the scoreboard and keep their own offense on the field to rack up yards and points. Houston has been inconsistent this season.

The Cardinals defeated the Patriots in the first game of the season, 13-6. Since then the Cardinals have suffered from inconsistent defense and turnover problems on offense that lead them to the bottom seed in the 2010 playoffs.

The Patriots returned the favor in Houston on April 10 with a road win over the Cardinals. If the third time is a charm for the Patriots, then the local team could be well on their way to more championship hardware.
