This year's Relay for Life, to be held Saturday in downtown Winnsboro in the parking lot behind the Princess Theater, will be in memory of one of Winnsboro's most beloved citizens, George P. Carter Jr., known to all of us as "Rocky."

Rocky was born July 13, 1951 to Ernestine Meyers Carter and George (Bubba) Carter of Winnsboro. He was the eldest of five children. He was a loving husband for 36 years to Teressa Stevens Carter. Rocky was a devoted father to Jaime Carter Williamson and Heather Carter. His most prized possession were his grandchildren: Caroline Grant, Ty Williamson, Taylor Williamson and Camille Grant.

Rocky had a very outgoing personality and left behind many cherished friends. He worked as a welding instructor for 11 years at the vo-technical college in Winnsboro, where he mentored young men and women. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winnsboro. Rocky spent 26 years as a coach. board of directors, league president and umpire for Dixie Softball. He loved spending time on the softball field, where he made a huge difference in the life of many youth. He was an avid outdoors-man who split his time between fishing and hunting and anyone who knew him knew he could do both very well.

Rocky was diagnosed with cancer Oct. 18. 2009 and passed away on Nov. 19, 2009.

During his short battle with cancer, he had the opportunity to tell all he loved goodbye.

Many people in Winnsboro knew Rocky and what a great man he was and could tell stories about how he impacted their lives. Rocky was memorable and is missed throughout Franklin Parish.

Everyone is invited as Rocky is honored this year for the difference he made in our lives.
