Saints draft
A cornerback, offensive lineman, tight end, defensive lineman, center and quarterback.
You had to figure when the New Orleans Saints made Florida State cornerback Patrick Robinson their No. 1 pick and finished up with Oregon State quarterback Sean Canfield that this was not your typical Saint draft looking for immediate help.
It was certainly a strange draft.
There will be a lot of second-guessing down the road.
It was also quite a draft for the Miss-Lou.
Tennessee defensive back Eric Berry went No. 5 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Berry's father, James Berry, was an All-State running back at North Natchez High School in the mid-1970s before signing with Tennessee.
Berry ranks No. 19 among all-time Vol career rushers with 1,721 yards. He scored 18 touchdowns.
If not for a knee injury, Berry would probably still be in the top 10. He also served as a captain his final year at Tennessee in 1981.
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Florida center Maurkice Pouncey with the No. 18 pick.
Maurkice's stepfather is Sicily Island native and former standout Sicily Island lineman Robert Webster.
Getting back to the Saints, I wouldn't be surprised to see two or three of the draft picks make a major contribution next season.
And that would be good considering the schedule.
One thing jumped out right away when I looked at the New Orleans Saints 2010 schedule - and that is the only prime time game being played in New Orleans.
The Saints are on Monday night twice, but both games — San Francisco and Atlanta - are on the road.
The one prime time home game is Sunday, October 31 against Pittsburgh.
Yeah, Halloween night in New Orleans.
Talk about entertainment.
Ben Roethlisberger, if he is still a Steeler, may have some tricks up his sleeve. If not he can find some tricks on Bourbon Street.
The Saints kick off the NFL season on Thursday, Sept. 9 against Minnesota.
Wow, if that doesn't make Brett Favre return, I don't know what will.
Last year he wanted to get back at the Packers by signing with the hated Vikings.
This year he can get back at the Saints for depriving him of another Super Bowl.
Eleven days later, the Saints play at Candlestick Park on Monday night against the 49ers.
Maybe Drew Brees can throw the ball into McCovey Cove since Barry Bonds no longer launches them in that arena.
Actually, Brees best keep his eyes on former Ole Miss standout Patrick Willis, who would love nothing better than to keep that Madden game streak alive by putting Brees out for the season.
The Saints hosts Atlanta on Sept. 26.
The Falcons have Matt Ryan at quarterback. They could have Matt LeBlanc at quarterback and still give the Saints fits. There's just something about that rivalry.
Carolina comes to the Dome on Oct. 3 without Jake Delhomme.
New Orleans travels to Arizona on Oct. 10 and Kurt Warner will be glad not to be among the welcome wagon.
A trip to Tampa Bay is followed by a home game against Cleveland.
The first game of November finds the Saint in Carolina, followed by a home game against Seattle.
The Saints will play their first game on Thanksgiving as they travel to Dallas for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff.
Wow, finally a reason not to nap after turkey dinner.
A visit to Cincinnati in early December is followed by a home game against St. Louis. The Saints visit Baltimore and Ray Lewis on Dec. 19, followed by an away game at Atlanta.
The Saints end their regular season against Tampa Bay.
Hopefully the veterans will not play much because they are being rested for the playoffs.
Back to back Super Bowl wins? I doubt it. But I do think we will be waiting around a while again next April for the Saints' first pick of 2011. |
