Lady Patriots awaiting playoff schedule

The Franklin Parish Lady Patriots will be awaiting their playoff fate on Thursday morning as the LHSAA meets to finalize the softball playoff brackets for each classification. Each of the 10 Class 4A districts will get automatic bids to their district champion and runner-up and the rest of the 32-team bracket will consist of 12 at-large bids from around the state.
In the case of 3-4A on the local level, West Ouachita and Ruston have taken the automatic bids for the district of the Lady Patriots. West Ouachita downed FPHS 8-0 and Ruston beat the Lady Patriots 5-0 last week.

"West Ouachita has dominate pitching," Franklin Parish head coach Richie Kelly said. "We got on base several times but could not get anything consistently going on offense."

At Ruston, the Lady Patriots struggled to make enough solid plays on defense.

"Ruston scored four unearned runs," Kelly said. "Errors just killed us. Our bats have been cold the last few games."

Kristin Newman has pitched well in district play for the Lady Patriots with minimal wins last week. Kortnie Kelly and Holly Erwin each got key hits for the Lady Patriots against Ruston but FPHS left too many runners stranded in the game.

The team was able to make some good defensive plays against Ruston despite being without one of their top gloves in the outfield.

"We have played real well defensively," Kelly said. but we played without Ashley Moore who was on a mission trip. Overall, we did well."

The Lady Patriots wrapped up their regular season on Tuesday night against the Bastrop Lady Rams in a game that could go a long way toward determining if Thursday's playoff bracket includes the Lady Patriots.
