Ellington loses bid for No. 2 leadership post in House
Rep. Noble Ellington fell short Monday in his bid to become Speaker Pro-Tempore in the state House of Representatives.
By a 53-48 vote, Rep. Joel Robideaux, an Independent from Lafayette, was chosen Speaker Pro-Tempore over Ellington. The roll call voice vote was conducted shortly after the Legislature convened the 2010 Regular Session.
Ellington's bid for the No. 2 leadership position in the House sparked a public feud between Ellington and Speaker of the House Jim Tucker. Tucker, R-Metairie, said he opposed Ellington serving as Speaker Pro-Tempore because northern Louisiana was already well represented in leadership positions in the Legislature.
Six of northeast Louisiana's eight House members voted for Ellington. The two lawmakers from northeast Louisiana who voted for Robideaux were Reps. Kay Katz, R-Monroe, and Rosalind Jones, D-Monroe.
House members who voted for Ellington were Reps. Bubba Chaney, D-Rayville; Rick Gallot, D-Grambling; Hollis Downs, R-Ruston; Sam Little, R-Bastrop; Frank Hoffmann, R-West Monroe; and Jim Fannin, D-Jonesboro. |
