It is that time of year again. District 3-4A baseball returns to Winnsboro on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The Franklin Parish Patriots (9-10) host the Bastrop Rams (6-9) on Thursday to begin a three-game district series that will conclude with a double-header in Bastrop on Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Patriots are coming off a rough weekend playing in the Caldwell Spartan's tournament this past weekend. The Patriots went 1-2 in the tournament. Forrest High School beat the Patriots for the second time in four attempts this season with a 16-5 triumph. The Caldwell Spartans followed up that performance with a hit parade of their own. The Spartans downed FPHS 13-3.

The Patriots were able to avoid the broom closet on Saturday evening with a 11-9 win over Grant High School to close the tournament.

Forrest scored early and often in the opening game of the tournament.

The Patriot pitching staff surrendered 16 runs on nine hits over four innings. Michael Parks took the loss for the Patriots after giving up five runs on four hits in just two innings of work. Parks was the second pitcher on the mound after Devin McManus lasted just one inning. Parks did average a strikeout each inning in a bright spot of power pitching for the Patriots.

Steven Williams relieved Parks and was tagged with 10 runs, nine of them earned, on just four hits. Williams lost his control badly during the game and issued seven walks. The Patriots issued 14 walks in the game against Forrest.

Parks started the next game against Caldwell and again had some control issues. Parks did record two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

Michael Whitley came in to relieve Parks. Caldwell pounded out 13 runs on 8 hits, including 10 earned runs, over 1.2 innings of work for the Patriots.

On offense, FPHS got just three runs on three hits. Tyler Dooley, Kameron Harper, and Trent Williams were the only Patriot hitters to get in the hit column against Caldwell.

The Patriots broke out of the hitting slump on Saturday night against Grant High School, winning 11-9. FPHS scored 11 runs on 11 hits in the contest.

Trent Williams, the top hitter for the Patriots this season, recorded 2 doubles and three RBIs in the game.

Grant scored nine runs on 12 hits in the game. FPHS pitchers issued six walks with only one strikeout in the game.

The Patriots will be working hard on improving their all-around game this week for district play. Defense and pitching will be a top-priority for the Patriots this weekend.

Bastrop comes to Winnsboro on Thursday on a three-game losing streak. The Bastrop team has fought through major coaching problems over the years.

Whit Whitlock, a former Bastrop High School and Louisiana College player, is now the fourth head coach in the last four years at Bastrop High School.
