Dumas sworn in as interim mayor
Winnsboro City Court Judge Ann McIntyre issued the oath of office to city councilman John "Sonny" Dumas Friday morning during a ceremony held at city hall. Dumas will serve as interim mayor for the city of Winnsboro pending the election results from the upcoming primary March 27. Rex McCarthy will continue to serve as mayor pro tem.
Dumas is running for re-election in the upcoming election against Deborah Davidson for the District 2 seat.
"It was the intent of Mayor Hammons to see this city continue to improve and move forward," Dumas said. "I want the people to know that I cannot fill his shoes, but I can follow in his footsteps."
Hammons, who passed away March 5 after a short battle with cancer, served as Winnsboro's mayor for the last 12 years.
Accompanied by his wife, Monica, and several members of his immediate family, including daughters Destiny Dumas, 15, and Ree Ree Dumas, 12; Kevin Williams; and nephew Desmond, Dumas promised to uphold the laws of the parish and the state to the best of his ability. LaJoy Dumas of Shreveport, the couple's eldest child, and twin Kendrick Williams were unable to attend the ceremony.
"Of course, I think they (the board) made a fine selection," said Monica, "I think he will do whatever it takes to move the city in a positive direction."
"Sonny and I have a good working relationship since I've been on the council," said alderman Craig Gill. "I'm looking forward to working with him in his new position as mayor."
The board of alderman will select someone from Dumas' district to fill his position to represent District 2 until the election. |
