DC Gators to participate in memorial tournament The Delhi Charter Gators (3-5) will be heading to Winnsboro to play in the Mathew Johnston Memorial Tournament beginning Thursday at Franklin Parish High School. The tournament will feature two groups of teams and the winner of each "pool play" bracket will meet for the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Delhi Charter will be in a tough pool. The Gators will be playing in pool two with the Bastrop Rams of class 4A and the Caldwell Spartans of Class 3A. Franklin Parish, Rayville, and Block will be in the other bracket.
On Thursday, the tournament gets started with the Block Bears taking on the Rayville Hornets at 4:30 p.m. Delhi Charter will meet the Caldwell Spartans at 7 p.m. to end the first day of tournament action.
Delhi Charter battles the Bastrop Rams to begin the Friday action at 4:30 p.m. Franklin Parish will then play Rayville at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 10 a.m. Franklin Parish begins the day by taking on Block followed by Caldwell and Bastrop who are set to battle at 12:30 p.m. the championship game will pit the winners of each pool playing at 7 p.m. Saturday. The third-place teams will play at 3 p.m. Saturday and the 5 p.m. contest will feature each brackets second-place team going head-to- head.
Scores and schedules will be updated daily on the internet at www.fphsbaseball.com Delhi Charter comes into the game on a five-game losing streak. The Gators have met two teams in the Mathew Johnston Memorial Tournament in the past, Franklin Parish and Rayville. The Gators began the regular season with a 15-8 victory over the Patriots two weeks ago.
DCS is coming off a four straight losses in the Trey Altic Memorial Tournament at Sterlington High School.
The Gators could not find any consistency on the mound or at the plate during the tournament. The Gators did come out of the tournament with experience against four top Class 2A opponents in the process of the four losses, Northlake Christian ripped the Gators 13-0 on Thursday night.
The offense found some life on Friday night but breakdowns in defense and pitching lead to a 15-5 loss to Holy Savior Menard. The two teams that met in the Class 2A state championship game last season, the Sterlington Panthers and Evangel Christian Academy Eagles were on the docket for the Gators on Satuday.
The Gators got back to good form on the mound and found ways to make a few good defensive plays before falling to Class 2A runner-up Sterlington 4-1 Saturday morning. Evangel, the defending state champions of Class 2A, were much more offensively potent as they belted out double-digits in hits and downed the Gators 10-0.
Delhi Charter will not return home until next Thursday when they play host to the Oak Grove Tigers in a district series. |
