'Catfish Cookoff' slated during Taste of Franklin event The very popular "Catfish Cookoff" held in conjunction with the Taste of Franklin will be expanded this year to include a category for "Best Fried Catfish".
As always, this year's event will be held in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce's annual "Taste of Franklin" , and will be held in the United Pentecostal Church Family Life Center located on Loop Road in Winnsboro.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 18 and, according to Festival Director Paul Price Jr., entrants in the "Cookoff" are now being accepted.
"We've had a lot of fun with this event the last five years, and we're certainly pleased to be able to expand on it this year in conjunction with the Chamber's 'Taste of Franklin'," Price said. Entry in either category is open to anyone living in or working in Franklin Parish, and will be limited to the first 15 entrants. The Catfish Festival will provide five pounds of Louisiana pond-raised catfish for each entrant.
All recipes in the "non-fried" category must be prepared off-site and brought to the Taste of Franklin ready to serve. Those purchasing a ticket for the Taste of Franklin will be among those able to sample a small piece of each of the entered recipes.
Fried fish entries will need to be cooked on site. A location will be made available for those entering this event, but each entrant will need to provide their own cooking equipment.
Contest judges will sample all entries and award first, second, and third place honors. In addition to a plaque, the first place winner in each category will receive $200, second place $100, and third place $50.
"The Taste of Franklin is an 'all you can taste' event with only a limited number of tickets available, and we're glad to be a partner with the Chamber on it," Price said. "Combining this with the Taste of Franklin is a great fit for both events."
Those interested in participating should contact Price at 435-4105. Entry deadline is Friday, March 12th.
