Story Archives: Delhi Gators wrap up season

Delhi Gators wrap up season
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Delhi Charter Gators and Lady Gators wrapped up their seasons last week with the Gators downing Cedar Creek in district action 61-53 and the Lady Gators falling to Cedar Creek, 64-26.

The Lady Gators finish the season with a 5-17 record.

The Lady Gators went 2-8 in district play including a pair of victories over the St. Frederick Lady Warriors of Monroe. Brionna McDowell was a true force under the basket for the Lady Gators this season.

McDowll averaged in double-figures for both scoring and rebounds throughout the year for Delhi Charter.

Monique Fletcher also had a big year for the Lady Gators. Fletcher averaging around nine points per game for the Lady Gators.

Dee Dee Killian averaged about 11 points per game in district play and also grabbed a season-high nine rebounds in a district game against OCS on Jan. 29.

A final power ranking of 6.47 put the Lady Gators just out of the reach of the playoffs.
The top 32 teams in each classification qualify for the playoffs and Delhi Charter finished in 38th-place. That was good enough for fourth-place in the district behind Oak Grove, Cedar Creek, and Ouachita Christian School. St. Frederick went 0-21 this year and was last in the 2010 standings for district 2-1A.

On the boys side of things, the Gators finished the district schedule with a huge win over Cedar Creek that gave the team a happy, uplifting note to end the season on.

It would appear to not be good enough for a spot in the LHSAA class 1A playoff bracket. The brackets officially get released next Monday, Feb. 25.

The 5-21 record for the Gators did not always reflect the intensity of the team while they struggled to put the ball in the basket. Kent Speight led the Gators in scoring with around 16 points per game.

Demarius Brass came on strong late in the season and averaged 15 points per game in district play. The Gators found themselves settling for some long jump shots all during the year as well as struggling to convert at the free throw line.

The Gators averaged around 18 free throw shots per game but were below 50 percent shooting from the charity stripe in 2010.

Riccie Gray was a rebounding specialist underneath the basket for DCS. Gray, who also was a gridiron star for the Gator football team, averaged eight rebounds per game in 2010.
