The long-awaited repair and reconstruction of Horace G. White Learning Center could begin in less than a month, according to school officials. Members of the Franklin Parish School Board approved a bid of some $548,000 from Pullman & Willbanks Construction to rebuild the classroom wing destroyed by an arson blaze at the school nearly a year ago.

"Once we sign the contract, everything will be ready for them to get started," said Supt. Lanny Johnson. "I believe we'll have a lot better facility than what we had before."

In property news, the board approved a motion to advertise for bids to sell the Ogden School campus located on the west side of the highway in Liddieville. According to the most recent appraisal, the campus and buildings are valued at $40,000.

Board members unanimously approved the technology plan update presented by Thoy Leonard, technology coordinator. The current plan, established in 2007, will be updated to accommodate increasing demand of web and Internet-based services in Franklin schools. The 2010-2011 plan will expire in June of 2012. The board also approved a motion to advertise for bids for some 270 refurbished tablet PC computers to be used in the classrooms.

"The tablet PCs are designed to work with the software already in place," said Leonard. "They can be used in several areas of study, including science and social studies."

The Patriots semi-professional football team has been granted use of the Franklin Parish High School Patriot stadium under conditions stated in the Facility Use Agreement. The team of some 40 players will begin their regular season March 5, for a series of 10 games. Five of those games will be played in the FPHS stadium the Patriots now call home.
