Story Archives: Patriots visit Tiger territory after loss to Rams Friday

Patriots visit Tiger territory after loss to Rams Friday
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Franklin Parish High School Patriots (22-4) will continue district 3-4A action this Friday night when they visit the Neville Tigers (21-9). The Patriots are coming off their first district loss of the season when they lost to the Bastrop Rams last Friday night, 70-62.

Brandon Sims averaged 19.5 points per game during a two-game stretch last week that included a 74-60 win over the Ruston Bearcats. He scored 20 points in that game and 19 against Bastrop. Roosevelt Walker was held to a season-low four points because of the powerful zone defense Bastrop played against FPHS. Adrian Witherspoon led the Bastrop offensive charge with 24 points.

The Patriots also struggled to keep pace at the free throw line against a Bastrop team that was fighting for their first district win of the season. The turnover bug also bit the Patriots in the fourth quarter.

"We had some turnovers, too many turnovers in the second half," Franklin Parish coach Wyscee Kerry said. "They made some key free throws."

Now Neville, perhaps the biggest surprise in the district, welcomes the Patriots on Friday.

Neville starts a junior center in Zay Henderson who is taking the district by storm.

Henderson scored 15 points per game for the Tigers in district action last week and is nearly averaging a double-double.

Dee Garrison has not been a high scorer most of the season for Neville but scored 17 points in a win over Bastrop last week.

Freshman point guard K.D. Turpin has turned some heads around the district with his accurate passes and speed on the defensive end.

"He has been amazing," Neville head coach Phillip Craig said. "Sometimes I forget he is just a freshman out there."

The Patriots are still very much in the race for another district championship with about month left to go in the regular season.

The Franklin Parish Lady Patriots will begin their game with Neville at 6 p.m. The Patriots will play the Neville Tigers about 10 minutes after the conclusion of that game.

Correction: A report last week in The Franklin Sun mistakenly reported the score of the Franklin Parish Patriots basketball game last week. FPHS boys defeated the West Ouachita Chiefs 61-41 while the Lady Patriots lost to West Ouachita 50-48.
