Story Archives: Patriots down Neville, 77-72

Patriots down Neville, 77-72

The Franklin Parish High School Patriots (20-4) will continue district 3-4A action this Friday night when they battle the Bastrop Rams.

The Patriots are coming off a huge district setback at the hands of the West Ouachita Chiefs. Last Friday the Chiefs downed FPHS 50-48 after a fourth-quarter rally by the Patriots fell just short. The loss means the Patriots now trail the Wossman Wildcats by one game in the district standings.

The undefeated team from Monroe has played a tough schedule this season including grabbing wins over Class 3A powerhouse Carroll, a former district member for Franklin Parish. Wossman has also beaten the defending Class 5A champion Ouachita Lions in an early season contest this season.

The Patriots will visit Wossman next Tuesday in what could be considered a major stepping stone toward the district 3-4A championship in 2010. In this week's Friday night matchup with Bastrop, the Patriots will be facing a team that has played a very tough schedule and thus making their 10-11 record show a team not as good as the product the Rams will put on the court against Franklin Parish this week.

Bastrop is lead by their lone senior this season, guard Donald Washington. Washington averages nine points and 4.5 assists per game this season. Washington is also second on the team in rebounds with five per game. At just 5-8, he is a player that is fearless when it comes just bagging around underneath the basket to grab crucial rebounds during games.

Bastrop is coming off a 51-47 win over Dollarway, Arkansas in a non-district game on Saturday night.

The defensive minded Rams have been highly successful in keeping teams from running up the score most nights. Bastrop has held several opponents to under 50 points this season despite having only one upperclassman on the roster.

Franklin Parish has been solid on the defensive end as well this season and the match of the speedy guards from each school will be one many fans want to check out during the district tilt that begins with a girls contest at 6 p.m. in Winnsboro. The boys will tip off about 10 minutes after the end of the Lady Patriots game.
