Special primary March 27 for Young's seat

Voters will have the chance this Spring to chose a new juror to take Ray Young's District 3 seat, which he resigned in December.

A special primary ballot for the seat is scheduled for March 27 with the general election to be held May 1.

Young announced he was stepping down from the seat he has held since 1993 during a Police Jury special meeting last month.

He declined to say exactly why he was leaving, only that he has been offered a position involving agriculture that allows him to continue working in the best interest of Franklin Parish and Louisiana.

He said the law didn't allow him to take the position and still be on the police jury.
The jury voted at the meeting in which Young resigned to appoint James Harris to temporarily fill the seat.

Harris recently said he plans to put his hat in the ring for the upcoming election.
"My intention always was to run at the end of Mr. Ray's term if he wasn't going to run," Harris said. "I wasn't going to run against him, but I was going to run if it was his last term."

Another vying for the seat is Leo Miller, who currently serves as an alderman in Gilbert.

Miller previously ran unsuccessfully against Young for his spot on the police jury.

"I ran before because I have a great interest in our district. Things I that I want to see improved include the safety of our kids and the drainage for the whole district," Miller said.

Candidates must qualify for the election from Feb. 3 to 5, according to the Franklin Parish Registrar of Voters.

Committee members chosen by the police jury in a special election on Jan. 6 include Buddy Parks, Jackie Johnson and James Harris for finance; Troy Hendry, Jackie Johnson and Ricky Campbell for personnel; Ricky Campbell, Leroy Scott and Jackie Johnson for recreation; Harvey Guimbellot and Troy Hendry for insurance, Ricky Campbell, Buddy Parks and Troy Hendry for public works; Harvey Guimbellot, Ricky Campbell and Buddy Parks for garbage; Jackie Johnson, Troy Hendry and Buddy Parks for appropriations; Jackie Johnson and Leroy Scott for North Delta Board, James Harris as hospital liaison, Ricky Campbell, Troy Hendry and Buddy Parks for purchasing; Buddy Parks and James Harris for courthouse;Leroy Scott, Harvey Guimbellot and Jackie Johnson for economic development; Ricky Campbell, Buddy Parks and Troy Hendry for fire district; Mitch Reynolds, Harvey Guimbellot and Troy Hendry for appeals.

The Franklin Parish Police Jury regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m.
