Franklin Parish extends winning streak in Sicily Island

The Franklin Parish Patriots (18-3) won the Sicily Island Tournament last week on their way to their seventh straight victory. The Patriots beat Plainview High School in the opening round of the tournament, 65-37.

Roosevelt Walker lead the way with 17 points for Franklin Parish. Tyrell Winn added 15 points for the Patriots.

A great mix of full court press and half court zone defense has lead to turnovers and easy baskets for the Patriots for much of this season.

"Our defense sets up our offense," Franklin Parish head coach Wystee Kerry said. "Our full court press has been doing a real good job. Our defense is causing turnovers and getting us easy baskets."

The next day, the Patriots returned to Sicily Island to defeat Block High School 79-74. The win set them up with Ferriday in the championship game. Brandon Sims dominated the paint and scored 28 points to lead the Patriots against Block.

Winn scored 19 points while Walker added 18 points for Franklin Parish.

Ferriday (2-14) beat Tensas Parish 62-57 to earn a shot to knock off the Patriots.

The Patriots used a steady dose of full court pressure to create multiple turnovers in the first half to build a large lead.

It was much of the same in the second half as FPHS cruised to a 80-43 victory over Ferriday.

Walker lead the Patriots with 18 points. Sims added 15 points and Winn scored 14 for the Patriots.

Now the Patriots will host a pair of home games this week. Lake Providence will come to Winnsboro Tuesday night for a double-header with the girls team. The Patriots junior varsity team will meet Lake Providence at 5 p.m. with the varsity girls playing 10 minutes after the conclusion of the JV contest.

On Friday night the teams have their final non-district home game as they host the Block Bears. The games begin at 6 p.m. with the Lady Patriots taking on the Lady Bears.

Block will be looking for revenge on the boy's side after the five-point loss to FPHS in the Sicily Island Tournament.

The Lady Patriots begin district 3-4A play next week with the Patriots playing Neville to start district competition on Jan. 19.
