"What Are You Looking For?"

"I still haven't found what I'm looking for." These are the words of Bono, lead singer of the popular rock band U2. One might say that these words merely represent the desperate plea of one individual, a person longing for something in this world that will relieve his or her endless search for peace. Maybe this is an anthem for a generation; a generation looking for answers, yet never seeming to find the solution. Whatever Bono is saying, I believe this is a universal outcry.

"And when they came into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him."

Matthew's gospel records this momentous event when wise men from the east came into the presence of God. What were these wise men searching for? Often we find ourselves searching for God in diverse places. We as individuals are moving fast toward goals, success, retirement, but often we feel that we have not found the thing we seek. Could it be that we are searching for the answers in things that can't give us the peace we so desperately need?

The wise men followed a star which led them to an unlikely place: a manger, a house for animals. This search led them to a carpenter and a young Hebrew girl, watching over their child with love and anticipation. In this unlikely setting these wise men found God.
So today, in 2009, in this Christmas season, what are we searching for? Whatever it is, there is grace, mercy, and peace in God's love. And we can find this, perhaps in an unlikely place. We can find this peace in the middle of the storms of life: disease, loss, loneliness or bankruptcy. Whether at home with family, at the office, or driving down the road in our vehicles, we can experience God, the God that all of humanity at its deepest core is searching for in one way or another. The wise men found what they were looking for in a stable, so let us open our hearts and minds to see God at work in this world, however unlikely the place.
