Story Archives: Delhi Gators to host Claiborne Crusaders

Delhi Gators to host Claiborne Crusaders

The Delhi Charter Gators (1-11) will be hosting a boys and girls basketball doubleheader Thursday night against the Claiborne Christian Crusaders.

The Delhi Charter boys are coming off a 60-33 loss at Sterlington and a pair of losses in the Cedar Creek tournament last week. DCS continues to struggle on the rebounding and free throw shooting end against teams with more size. This proved costly against the Class 2A Panthers.

Although a young team themselves, Sterlington was able to hit a few early jump shots that carried the momentum over throughout the contest.

Kent Speight again scored in double figures to continue to pace the Gator offense. Getting some more scoring on the perimeter is something the Gators hope they get as the football players who joined the team last week get into the lineup.

The Gators also had trouble in the second half with more costly turnovers. With Gabe Robinson back in the lineup along with several football players working back into basketball shape, depth is getting better for the Gators as they work through a challenging non-district schedule.

The Gators will be hosting a Claiborne Christian team that is 9-6 on the season. The Crusaders will make the drive from West Monroe after falling to Gibsland Coleman at home last week, 64-45.

CCS has won three of their last five games including wins over Farmerville (59-45) and Downsville (53-30).

A physical team that runs the floor well, DCS will match up better in the depth department against Claiborne Christian than probably any team they have faced so far this season.

Speight will likely get plenty of attention from teams as they watch film and try to get a hold on one of the top scorers in district 2-1A.

Robinson, who was a leader at guard last season, should be able to put the ball in the basket at an even higher clip this season.

The Lady Gators will begin the double-header at 6 p.m.
